How to Build a WhatsApp Chatbot Without Coding
By the auton8n team · Updated 19 September 2026
A WhatsApp chatbot answers customers instantly, day and night, collects their details and sends the right ones to your team. With a visual flow builder you can build one in an afternoon, without a developer. This guide uses the auton8n flow builder.
Step 1: Decide what the bot should do
Pick one job first, for example answering price enquiries, booking appointments or qualifying leads. Write down the questions customers ask most and the details your team needs from each lead.
Step 2: Start from a template or a blank flow
auton8n has more than 25 ready-made flows, for example for travel agencies, clinics, restaurants, real estate, coaching institutes, online stores and lead qualification. Start from one and adjust it, or start blank.
Step 3: Choose the trigger
The trigger decides when the flow starts: when a customer sends a keyword such as PRICE or BOOK, or on any message, as a catch-all welcome flow.
Step 4: Add the steps
- Messages with text, images, videos or documents
- Buttons and lists so customers tap instead of typing
- Questions that save the answer to the contact, such as name, city or budget
- Conditions that send customers down different paths based on their answers
- Delays and follow-ups
- WhatsApp Forms and appointment booking
- An AI agent that answers free-text questions from your own business information
- Hand-over to a human, and notifications to your team
Step 5: Test, then turn it on
Test the flow from your own phone and try the unusual answers too. When it works, turn it on and watch the run history to see where customers drop off. Improve those steps first.
Tips for a bot customers like
- Keep messages short, one question at a time.
- Always offer a way to reach a person.
- Use buttons for common choices, and AI for everything else.
- Review conversations every week and add answers for new questions.
